dear friends,
today’s show marks the 50th anniversary of the release of the Miles Davis record Sketches of Spain, and we pay tribute to it on here on the Odd Preoccupation with a surreal journey through a desert where all times exist as one and blood, fire and butter are the order of the day. feast your earholes on this, friends:

dear friends,
it’s the latest and greatest episode of Slappy Pinchbottom’s Odd Preoccupation, presented right here for your listening pleasure. i call this one ‘influences’. this particular assemblage features the voices of peter cook, chris morris, max ernst, paul bowles, ken nordine, laurie anderson, colleen mcelroy, joe frank, michael gerber, william s. burroughs, dave mcbride, and the black pope, with station IDs by steve moore, agent datura and mc hawking, and music beds contributed all unawares by jeffff elder. enJoy!

randomness

dear friends,
there was no particular theme for this episode of the OP; just a few old and new favorites thrown together, including a couple of nice pieces from the pansophoscopist. unknowing contributors included: radio free vestibule, slim moon, the firesign theatre, william shatner remixed by fall on your sword, mc frontalot, dave mcbride, laurie anderson, jim norton reading from the flann o’brien novel the third policeman, joe frank, ken nordine, ron berry, bob holling, and richard dunham. for some reason i sound completely manic at the beginning of the show and very relaxed by the end. enJoy,

dear friends,
this week it was our privilege to host the Texas Youth Word Collective, and feature pieces performed live by three young poets from that group. it’s intense and socially conscious work, friends. we also hear about their upcoming trip to the Brave New Voices National Youth Poetry Festival.

black history month
by slappy on February 21st, 2010
dear friends,
in honor of Black History Month it’s our pleasure to present this week recordings of African-American spoken word artists and other speakers from practically the beginning of recorded sound all the way up to the present day.
some of the voices on this show belong to: June Jordan, Shafiq, W.E.B. DuBois, Claude McKay, Lucille Clifton, Gil Scott-Heron, Rita Dove, Gwendolyn Brooks, Amiri Baraka, Maya Angelou, Saul Williams, Carl Hancock Rux, and Ntozake Shange. interspersed with their work you will find oral history recordings taken in Chicago in the early 1980s by Studs Terkel, as he prepared his epic work of ethnography and history on the subject of race in America. enJoy,
