collage collage
by slappy on July 11th, 2010
dear friends,
this week’s Odd Preoccupation featured a collage-type episode, most of it with multiple sound sources (spoken, instrumental and atmospheric) fading in and out of each other and basically creating a freaking AUDITORY WONDERLAND. tune in here to see just what the hell i could possibly be talking about:
voices heard in that episode include those of paul bowles, spalding grey, rick moody, john lurie, amelia duende, kelly mark, public works, caroline bergvall, and shelley hirsch. in addition, we pay tribute to our recently appointed poet laureate w. s. merwin (a particular favorite of yours truly), and slappy fills us in at excruciating length on all his many disbeliefs. enJoy!

the black forest fancies
by slappy on June 13th, 2010
dear friends,
this week’s show brings us a great interview with New Orleans puppeteers and fabulists the Black Forest Fancies, who have a historically fancy puppet show going on over at the Blue Theater right now called The Pomology of Sweetness and Light. they had some fascinating things to say about the art and craft of puppetry, art and life in New Orleans, the transcendentalist and agriculturalist John Chapman (aka Johnny Appleseed, the subject of their puppet show), and other divers topics. check out their show if you get a chance! (for more details, here’s what mr. w. a. brenner at the austin chronicle had to say about it.)
here’s our interview, it was totally fun:

by slappy on April 25th, 2010
dear friends,
this week’s episode of the Odd Preoccupation asks but a single question, though it is perhaps the single most important question ever posed by human or machine:
many voices weigh in on this essential enigma of the human condition, including those of eliot haynes, kyra edeker, ilan bachrach, r.j. moore, katie pearl, marty blevins, hank cathey, rowan hartin, naomi shihab nye, russell case, thedward blevins, amelia rose duende, adam sultan, steve moore, wayne butane, connor hopkins, and aaron mace. our theme song was improvised by Girls Girls Girls. enJoy,

dear friends,
this week’s episode was all Fusebox, all the time, and featured Wura-Natasha Ogunji and her 100 black women, 100 actions project, the Rude Mechs‘ Kirk Lynn talking scavenger hunt, Aaron Mace from the Church of the Friendly Ghost, and Fusebox jefe Ron Berry. a fun conversation about cool things for you to go do!

susan tyrrell, the queen of the sixth dimension
by slappy on April 11th, 2010
a half-hour interview with the great actress Susan Tyrrell (of the Forbidden Zone, Cry Baby, Andy Warhol’s Bad and many other classic outsider films.) you’re not likely to meet a raunchier 65-year-old double amputee (unless you lead a fairly unusual life.)
please to enjoy:

mc frontalot meets metafilter
by slappy on March 14th, 2010
dear friends,
couple of weeks back it was my privilege to have in the studio several of my all-time-favorite internet famous people: the administrators and moderators of my favorite hangout on the Net, Metafilter.com, along with the Final Boss of Nerdcore Hiphop himself, MC Frontalot. the show was a lot of fun, in large part because it turned out they were mutual fans of each other already!
catch this slappycast today to hear us shoot the breeze about SXSW Interactive, the high price of internet fame, the birth of Nerdcore, the divide between the Information Phone and the Artificial Person Phone, the social dynamics of a fast-growing community website (and the commensurate asshattery which must be stopped before it can begin), and many inside references to things only nerds like us will recognize. please to enjoy:

packing it in with the glamping trip
by slappy on February 7th, 2010
dear friends,
a couple of weeks back it was a true pleasure to have on the program austin improv SUPERGROUP the glamping trip, featuring David Lee Hess, Curtis Luciani, and John Ratliffe. the show was a surreal drifting between interview and invention; special guests included Bill Cosby and Jimmy Carter. hope it’s as much fun to listen to as it was to witness. catch the magic here:

indy fiction in theory and practice
by slappy on January 22nd, 2010
dear friends,
at long last we’re finally getting back on the blogging/podcasting tip here at the OP, and we’re re-inaugurating things with a study in literary contrast.
last week we were privileged to have as our guests representatives of two entirely fictive publishing concerns: from the quarterly American Short Fiction, editor Jill Meyers and contributor Michael Noll, and from the Fiction Circus, the one and only Miracle Jones. Noll and Jones each read pieces of their fiction, and then we had a grand old conversation about the state and future of fiction publishing, most especially focusing on the kind where nobody makes any money.
we also feature (during the last 10 or 12 minutes of the program) a conversation with Ron Berry of the Fusebox festival. we were both full of migas when this interview was recorded and it shows.

something in the weeds….is waiting….for you
by slappy on October 18th, 2007
dear friends,
we’re pleased as pineal gland punch to present a most unique episode of the Odd Preoccupation this week — it’s a full-length, hour-long, somewhat unwitting (on their end, unless they’ve been pulling my puppet strings from the beginning without my knowledge, which would be just like them) collaboration with our esteemed colleagues at cryptonarrative.com, and their audio subversion outlet, Medroxy Progesterone Acetate.
with a respectful bow and a sniggering wink toward the impending hallowday, our episode this week features the grim, grinning, and gruesome recounting of certain events in the small town of devlin, texas (or is it devlin, iowa?) the invisible hearse cruises for the hum goddess; the butcher surgeons are making another of their incompetent attempts at resurrecting flesh that was never alive; a missing child tells the tale, and learns a thing or two along the way. come join us, won’t you?
(all texts in this episode by D Bauler. all musics in this episode by MPA, except vamp track at the beginning, which was by the Peace Orchestra. arranged and performed by SP for the benefit of his OP.)
