Slappy’s blog, and welcome to it.

Dear friends,

Thanks for visiting the Odd Preoccupation’s new abode on the interwebs — come on in, put your feet up, let me take your hat, make yourself at home. I’ll be figuring out how this WordPress thingamabop works over the next few weeks and months, so expect added functionality and improved user experience as time goes on. It’s a work in progress — not that there’s any other kind.

Below you’ll find links to the May 10, 2007 edition of Slappy Pinchbottom’s Odd Preoccupation. It was an exciting show for me, because it was the inaugural edition of SP’sOP in its new timeslot, which also represents an expansion from 30 minutes to 60. That’s a full hour of Slappy that’s going to be coming at you, RIGHT at you, each and every week my friends! Can you TAKE it? There’s only one way to find out.

[That timeslot, by the way, if you want to catch the magic happening LIVE, is 3:30 to 4:30 in the PM, Thursday afternoons, on KOOP Radio -- 91.7 FM in Austin, koop.org on your streaming internet.]

http://www.pinchbottom.org/Slappy/slappy070510_Part3.mp3
http://www.pinchbottom.org/Slappy/slappy070510_Part4.mp3

In this episode we hear from:

  • theoretical cosmologist and novelist Janna Levin
  • poet (and comics writer, and novelist) Neil Gaiman
  • remix artists RIAA, Porest, People Like Us, and the Who Boys
  • poet and Serbian-American Charles Simic
  • hiphop emcee Sage Francis
  • MC Alec B and Lil’ Stevie in a mashup duet to long-distance love
  • my radio idol Joe Frank

and MORE!!! (though not much more.)

You should be able to subscribe to this thing as a podcast, too. I’ll edit this post and tell you how as soon as I look it up. Maybe I’ll be able to add a button to make it easy-peasy.

See you next week, dear friends.

Love squirting right in your ear,

Slappy P

Is it too early to subscribe and is it possibly too late as well? Moon over Morocco? If only we could hear more audio recordings of our *pal* Zippy’s daring do at the Coffe Shop dressed as the brave Arab painting brave paintings of Balthus. As a memeber of the young uprising professional non-realwork-ing class I too experience outrage.

Everyone who has been following this thread of e-mails will be delighted, I am sure, to realize that I have lived through the recent typhoon that brushed by the south of Taiwan. As a foreign correspondant I am typically reliant on local resources to do their work for me as I do not speak Chinese and do not leave my apartment much.

Those of you who now rely on this site for their news might want to indulge the timid queries of Englishman Louis Theroux – somewhat intrepid reporter on the American Fringe.

This very evening the wife and I were listening to Moon over Morroco during interludes of Louis Theroux interviewing gansgter rappers in my childhood home of New Orleans (go Saints) Of course many of you might remember that it was Paul Bowles who recorded the festival music to Moon over Morroco and that it was Louis Theroux’s father Paul who conducted Bowles last known interview in 1994 in Tangiers.

thanks for the links — i enjoy louis theroux’s style. (however, the link you posted right after the Al Green link doesn’t appear to work.)

paul bowles is one of my favorite writers and poets. i thought that ian holm did a fine job of portraying him in cronenberg’s naked lunch. i had forgotten that he made the first recordings of the Festival of Sacred Music in Fez, Morocco, and that those were used in Moon Over Morocco. most of the other incidental background sounds were also recorded on location in Morocco, by audio maverick Tom Lopez.

by the way, that festival is still going on every year:

    http://www.fesfestival.com/en07/index.htm

here’s a great travelogue from this year’s, done by a DJ at WFMU, the best radio station in the United States:

interesting to think about paul and louis theroux, too. i like paul theroux’s novels and travel writing quite a bit. he’s a darker, more serious artist than louis seems to be, and it just makes me think about how due to paul’s success, perhaps louis had an easier upbringing than paul, and that’s why his work is more easygoing and doesn’t have the depth that paul’s does, though of course it’s very funny and sophisticated and will probably be quite popular. personally, i would rather raise an easygoing, happy child than a genius. there’s too many geniuses in the world already.

also, back to moon over morocco. you’ll notice that the last two episodes of the Odd Preoccupation do not feature episodes of MoM. i had been thinking about polling my listeners to see if anyone was actually following the story, or tuning it just to hear it, or looking forward to future episodes; then i just decided to drop it and see if anyone noticed. however, i could easily start it up again where we left off. one of the reasons i was inclined to drop it was that it takes up almost a quarter of my airtime, and it prevents my presenting entire episodes of the Odd Preoccupation based around a single theme, as i was able to do this week. however, if there’s actual interest from listeners in keeping it going, i’d be glad to do so. what do you think?

  11. Krustifarian the Klown Klansman says:

Well, I can tell you that we for one would certainly miss further installments of MoM. Though we are beholden to the vagaries of the gods of odd preoccupations.

I was somewhat confused to the format of these comment pages. I thought I was in a more popular easier to find segment. Which makes me think I might have to post to my own blogspot rather than continue to subvert yours. If you get my meaning than I am sure we will see a more prominant display in the future. Now back to the news.

    A developing story…

In the month of October 2006 my wife (Eva B.) and I were traveling from an ashtanga conference in Helsinki, Finland to our present occupation in Taipei. To our mutual fascination we were entertained by a documentary on an former Olymipic Bulgarian wrestler who had made a highly successful and widely covered switch to Sumo (pronounced Ssih mhuh!)

Bulgarian Sumo Wrestler Kotooshu named Goodwill Ambassador

    http://www.sofiaecho.com/article/bulgarian-sumo-wrestler-declared-goodwill-ambassador/id_14621/catid_66

To reach the second highest rank in Sumo (Ozeki) he had to defeat the Mongolian Yokuzuna (highest rank) Asashoryu

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jO7BgausqmE

Asashoryu is know as something of a brat, but an unequaled competitor. He once pulled the topnot of another Sumo wrestler in a match. An unforgivable sin, and the only yokuzuna to ever be disqualified from a match. However he has won an unprecedented 21 tournaments for a foreigner. #5 all time and the only foreigner to even be ranked Yokuzuna.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asashoryu

    also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreigner_(band)

Recently due to injury Asashoryu skipped the summer exhibition season to heal, but was spotted playing soccer in his home of Mongolia.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1Calwm2rn8

This has caused a furor in Japan as he has stated that he was unable to perform. Sumo is currently suffering from low attendence–in part because of the prevalence of foreign Sumo wrestlers. His presence at the exhibition was seen as crucial.

He was summarily suspended two bouts and docked four months pay. Here comments the JapanToday.

    http://www.japantoday.com/jp/news/414775

Currently Asashoryu is holed up in his hotel room clinically depressed and in a state of acute distress. More to come

    typhoon again.

I interviewed a young Japanese woman outside of my yoga class today. Very few people are following this sumo scandal whatsoever in Taiwan. I expected her to be similarly nonplussed. However she was immediately interested and with a great smile on her face she said “Asashoryu! Yes, very very bad man.” “A foreigner?” “Yes, foreinger, but very bad.” “Not like Akebone?” No, Akebone Heng how. (very good! trans.)

Akebone for those of you paying attention was the great Hawaiian Yokuzuna Sumo giant at 6’8” tall.

here’s an analogy that occurred to me about the Moon Over Morocco thing. suppose there was a comic that i was following, and i suggested that you might mark off an area of about 20-25% of every painting you do, and present a new page of that comic in each one, working whatever other ideas you had about the painting around that blocked-off area? suppose you liked the comic too, and thought it was a well-done work of art, and well worth people’s time, and possibly even better than most of the stuff you paint? would you put the comic into your paintings?

If I could just take a moment to apologise for my earlier “live” broadcast. It was lewd and profane and I did not know I was being recorded by a plainclothes officer of the Odd Preoccupation.

And let me add here more news about Asa the Sumo in disgrace. Last week he was allowed to leave Japan for his home country of Mongolia. Today he has checked into a resort for his mental health which will involve a mud bath.
