how can you bling in two moonballs at once when your baby is going blind?
by slappy on May 31st, 2007
dear friends,
it was a lazy week on the Odd Preoccupation — the whole first half of the program is but a single track, which made my job extremely easy. luckily for you the listener, this track consists of 28 minutes of the most hilarious, surreal, quote-worthy audio comedy ever recorded: it’s the classic side How Can You Be In Two Places At Once When You’re Not Anywhere At All, by the incomparable Firesign Theatre. that’s Part 1, an extra-long chunk of auditory goodness.
Part 2 is our weekly episode of Moon Over Morocco, the ongoing mystical adventures of Jack Flanders (among others.) this week is episode 3 in the series, created by ZBS Productions (lots of other great audio works available on their website as well.).
In Part 3, we highlight a few gems from Too Much Light Makes The Baby Go Blind, a theatrical production in which Chicago’s Neo-Futurists stage 30 plays in 60 minutes, each and every week. If you’re in Chicago, check ‘em out!
Part 4 of our show starts off with a little flamenco-influenced hip hop from Ojos De Brujo , a track called El Confort No Reconforta. that leads into a bunch of banter between myself and John Erler, host of the Elk Mating Ritual Show, which follows the Odd Preoccupation on Thursdays on KOOP Radio. in the midst of the banter, the Bassturd featuring MC Keef lets us know about the latest way to earn your street cred: Bling Ballz.

Genetic anomalies in the HOUSE
by slappy on May 24th, 2007
Dear friends,
This week on the Odd Preoccupation featured a visit from the 999 Eyes Authentic Freakshow, a genuine traveling freakshow and cavalcade of human oddities, proudly and bawdily proclaiming the grand spectacle of genetic diversity both hither and yon. The interview, which begins in Part 1, continues in Part 2 with a lovely song by Jackie the Human Tripod backed up by That Damned Band.
Part 3 contains the Episode 2 of our continuing radio adventure serial, Moon Over Morocco. Part 4 features several pieces by poet Rae Armantrout, followed by an excerpt from an early play by Physical Plant Theater entitled Barber, Tall Man, Cora, Clown.

By the way friends, I’ve decided to start dating these posts by the date the radio episode aired, as opposed to the haphazard and procrastinatory “schedule” by which I post them to this blog. I don’t know exactly how that will affect RSS subscribers, not that I have any; do backdated posts still get picked up as new by podcatchers and RSS aggregators? If you know, please let me know here — muchas gracias!

owen orates and pinchbottom premieres MoM & MMM
by slappy on May 20th, 2007
dear friends,
this week’s episode of the Odd Preoccupation has it all: guest stars, world premiers, discussions of duende, and dub auctioneers. here are the files for your downloading pleasure:

Part 1 this week features the sad, not uncommon tale of old jack mathers, as recounted by the Who Boys. we then introduce a most welcome guest, Owen Egerton. owen is an austin-based writer and comedian, and here he graces us with a morbid little tale from his new book How Best To Avoid Dying. the story is called “Tonight at Noon”, and it continues in Part 2; afterwards, owen and i discuss death-in-art, the duende, and autoerotic asphyxiation.
Part 3 (introduced by agent datura) features the very first episode of the fantastic and mystical radio adventure serial, Moon Over Morocco. a new episode of MoM will be aired every Thursday at 4:00 (smack dab in the middle of the Odd Preoccupation) for the next good long while, as it’s a fairly lengthy series. keep an ear out for the proverbs and allow them to rule your life.
Part 4 starts off with some great hiphop from Keepers of Tym and Alexandros (whose track “Heliopolis” would be very handy to listen to before that upcoming exam on the history of ancient Egyptian dynasties.) we then segue into the Pinchbottom Premier of another slappylicious segment, Moore Meets Merwin, wherein austin playwright (and old pinchbottom pal) Steve Moore reads from the work of poet W. S. Merwin. we hope this becomes a recurring feature; it’s two great tastes that go great together, friends, and you’ll only hear it here on the Odd Preoccupation. after that is a fabulously forensic feature entitled “Tableau of a Lithotomy”, and we finish off with more of the who boys as they present the Return of the Dub Auctioneers, who seem to have a few more elks on the auction block than even the most talented tongue could possibly tally.
until next week, dear friends, i remain,
your histrionically humble host,

Dear friends,
Thanks for visiting the Odd Preoccupation’s new abode on the interwebs — come on in, put your feet up, let me take your hat, make yourself at home. I’ll be figuring out how this WordPress thingamabop works over the next few weeks and months, so expect added functionality and improved user experience as time goes on. It’s a work in progress — not that there’s any other kind.
Below you’ll find links to the May 10, 2007 edition of Slappy Pinchbottom’s Odd Preoccupation. It was an exciting show for me, because it was the inaugural edition of SP’sOP in its new timeslot, which also represents an expansion from 30 minutes to 60. That’s a full hour of Slappy that’s going to be coming at you, RIGHT at you, each and every week my friends! Can you TAKE it? There’s only one way to find out.
[That timeslot, by the way, if you want to catch the magic happening LIVE, is 3:30 to 4:30 in the PM, Thursday afternoons, on KOOP Radio -- 91.7 FM in Austin, koop.org on your streaming internet.]

and MORE!!! (though not much more.)
You should be able to subscribe to this thing as a podcast, too. I’ll edit this post and tell you how as soon as I look it up. Maybe I’ll be able to add a button to make it easy-peasy.
See you next week, dear friends.
Love squirting right in your ear,
