this week’s episode features a look back at some of my favoritest tracks from the 2006 Preoccupations, most of which never made it to a slappycast, so unless you’re a devoted KOOP listener you probably never heard them. featured artists include the firesign theater, the neo-futurists, the monkey vortex radio theater, joe frank, and the Odd Preoccupation Players. as if that weren’t enough, ventriloquism and the bible both have their part to play too (much like in my first marriage.) it’s more audio entertainment than you could shake a stick at, unless you have a really big stick (like i know you do) and you’re really good at shaking it (like i know you are.) enjoy!
plaps and cinchbottoms,
slappy
ps: as always, buzz me if you want no more announcements and it shall be so.

dear friends,
slappy pinchbottom here, pleased as persimmon punch to offer up to
you my latest Odd Preoccupation — fully digitized for your
downloading deployment and enjoyment. this will be the first in a
short series of INTERNET EXCLUSIVE episodes of our lil program,
occasioned by my temporarily being spanked off the austin radio
dial. never one to land in the dookie without smelling roses,
i’ve seized this shortlived suspension, wrestled it to the ground
and made it my cabana boy — in other words, dear friends, though
it’s bad news for the austin earwaves it’s great news for yours,
since by my way of thinking if i have to pre-record the whole show
anyway i might as well obsess over every little detail and take a
million hours to put half an hour of sound together, which leads
to only one thing for you the listener: QUALITY.
this particular episode of Slappy Pinchbottom’s Odd Preoccupation is devoted to the medium of poetry. we hear from a variety of poets both well-known and obscure, including e.e. cummings, john ashbery, naomi shihab nye, allen ginsberg, sylvia plath, amiri baraka, beth anderson, charles plymell, and steve moore. here are the files for your downloading delight:

if it would not be too presumptuous of me to offer a listening suggestion, i might propose that after hearing a poem you particularly enjoyed, or were intrigued by, pause the playback of this Odd Preoccupation and think about the poem you just heard for a moment or two. play back key phrases in your mind, try to piece the whole together. don’t be afraid to back up the recording and listen to a poem again, either. on the page, you have all the time in the world to contemplate the multifarious meanings a poem may convey. spoken, it’s a more difficult matter. take all the time you need.
in the service of thalia, calliope and erato, muses of poetry, as well as you, loyal listeners, i remain,
yr. humble host,
slappy pinchbottom
